Root canal treatment is virtually painless and often causes less discomfort during recovery than a natural tooth extraction. Thanks to modern techniques and effective anesthesia, it is six times more likely to be described as painless in patients with root canals than in patients with a tooth extraction.
During a root canal or other endodontic treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp will be removed and the inside of the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. It is then filled with a rubbery material called gutta-percha and sealed. The tooth is then restored with a crown or filling for protection and continues to function like any other tooth.
